That's not a design flaw — it's a design decision. Toyota built the 70-series hood from heavy-gauge steel because the truck was engineered for places where parts can't be replaced quickly: mining sites, aid corridors, the back roads of every continent. A steel hood survives a falling tree branch, a dropped tool, a kicked-up rock at 80 km/h. For four decades, that trade-off has made sense.
But it's still 38 kilograms — sitting forward of the front axle, on a chassis that owners are increasingly building heavier with steel bumpers, dual batteries, and reinforced winches. Every additional kilogram on the nose changes how the truck handles loaded, how the suspension behaves under brake dive, and how much front-end weight the springs are carrying after a full overland fit-out.
That's where this part starts.
The URNIETA Carbon Fiber Hood Kit replaces the OEM steel hood with a single-piece dry carbon fiber assembly — finished weight under 6 kilograms. A 32 kg reduction at the most weight-sensitive position on the chassis. The hood is laid up from prepreg dry carbon, autoclave-cured at 6 bar, and finished in either matte clear or satin clear over the visible weave. Functional vent geometry routes hot air out of the engine bay — a real upgrade for V8 LC79s and turbo-diesel builds running hot in summer or under load.
Built for the LC70 platform — LC71, LC76, LC78, and LC79 — across the 1984-to-present production run. Bolts to the OEM hinges, accepts the OEM latch, takes the factory hood prop. No body modification.
The factory hood was built to take a hit. This one was built to give the suspension a chance.
